Millwright Red Seal
Exam Preparation Guide
Start with the official exam information, then build a preparation plan around the knowledge you need to explain and apply.
What the exam assesses
The Industrial Mechanic (Millwright) Red Seal examination assesses trade knowledge against the occupational standard used for the exam. Your provincial or territorial apprenticeship and certification authority determines eligibility and handles the applicable registration process. Start there for requirements specific to your circumstances.
The official trade page currently distinguishes the standard used for existing exams from a newer standard whose exams are under development. Do not assume that a newly published occupational standard has already replaced the exam you will write.
Use the official subject breakdown
At the October 15, 2026 review, the official Exam Information page lists 135 multiple-choice questions across the following areas. Check that page again before planning your exam preparation; this table is a reference snapshot, not a prediction of your individual exam.
| Subject area | Questions |
|---|---|
| Common occupational skills | 25 |
| Rigging, hoisting/lifting and moving | 17 |
| Mechanical power transmission | 32 |
| Material handling and process systems | 24 |
| Fluid power | 21 |
| Maintenance, commissioning and decommissioning | 16 |
| Total | 135 |
These counts refer to the current-exam information linked above. The newer standard’s weighting page describes a different breakdown; use the official trade page to identify the appropriate reference for your exam.
Prepare to explain, apply and interpret
Build a self-assessment with one row per subject area. Record what you can explain without notes, which calculations you can work independently and which practical contexts are unfamiliar. Use that evidence to choose your study time instead of repeatedly practising only your strongest topic.
- Explain the principle. State a definition or relationship in your own words, with the relevant physical quantity or component function.
- Apply it to a changed situation. Alter the dimensions, operating condition or component arrangement in a class example. Show which assumption changes and recalculate with consistent units.
- Interpret evidence. For a troubleshooting scenario, separate observations from possible causes. Identify what additional measurement or reference would help distinguish the options.
After a practice question, explain why the correct option fits and why a plausible alternative does not. If you cannot do that without repeating the answer text, return to the underlying concept before answering more questions.
Keep official resources close

Use apprenticeship study to strengthen the foundation
Measurement, component functions, fluid principles and evidence-based reasoning continue to matter beyond an individual training level. The Levels 1–4 study guides offer selected themes and worked examples to revisit those fundamentals. They do not cover the entire certification exam or replace official preparation material.
Try the ten free website questions to practise reviewing an explanation. Their score is a small learning check, not an indication of certification readiness. Flag unclear wording or a technical concern so it can be reviewed.
