Millwright Level 4
Study Guide

Bring evidence, systems and maintenance decisions together.

Level 4 review should connect what a machine does with the evidence used to assess its condition. Instead of collecting isolated fault names, practise describing the operating context, comparing measurements and deciding what still needs confirmation. Keep clear records so another person can follow your reasoning.

Where this level fits in the BC curriculum

BC Level 4 brings together conveying, prime movers, maintenance, commissioning and automation. This guide focuses on condition information and communicating a reasoned conclusion.

Scope reference: SkilledTradesBC harmonized outline, printed page 18. These are selected study themes, not a complete syllabus. Confirm your provider’s current learning outcomes.

What to practise explaining

Read measurements in context

Record speed, load and the measurement location when comparing machine-condition information. A trend is more useful when readings are taken under comparable conditions. Note what changed between observations before interpreting the difference as deterioration.

Distinguish an indication from a diagnosis

A vibration component at running speed is a clue, not a complete fault diagnosis. Consider the measurement direction, operating state and other evidence. For non-destructive inspection, explain why the chosen method suits the material and the location of the discontinuity.

Communicate a maintenance decision

Build a short written handover with the symptom, the observed evidence, references consulted and the unresolved question. Separate a recommendation from a verified result. Use your training provider’s procedures to study commissioning and automated equipment; a web guide cannot demonstrate practical competence.

WORKED STUDY EXAMPLE

Convert rotational speed to a frequency reference

A shaft rotates at 1,800 rpm. What frequency corresponds to one event per revolution?

  1. There are 60 seconds in a minute. Divide 1,800 rev/min by 60.
  2. The shaft turns at 30 revolutions per second.
  3. One event per revolution therefore corresponds to 30 Hz, often called 1× running speed.

The arithmetic provides a reference frequency, not a fault diagnosis. Multiple causes can contribute at a given frequency; a complete interpretation needs additional measurements and machine context.

Questions and explanations to review

Magnetic particle inspection is best suited to detecting which defects in a ferromagnetic component?

Answer: Surface and near-surface defects. Magnetic particle inspection detects surface and near-surface discontinuities in ferromagnetic materials such as many steels. It is not suitable for non-ferromagnetic materials such as brass.

What is vibration frequency?

Answer: The number of vibrations in a unit of time. Frequency is the number of complete vibration cycles in a unit of time. Common units include hertz (cycles per second) and cycles per minute; it describes how often motion repeats, not how far the component moves.

What occurs when an excitation frequency matches a machine’s natural frequency?

Answer: Resonance. Resonance occurs when excitation matches a natural frequency. The response can become much larger, with its magnitude also depending on damping and the excitation force.

Put this into your next study session

  1. Compare two maintenance observations and identify whether speed, load and measurement location are comparable.
  2. Explain one inspection method in terms of material suitability and the kind of discontinuity it can reveal.
  3. Finish a study session by writing a concise handover: observation, evidence, uncertainty and the reference you would consult next.

Close your notes for the first attempt, then check your reasoning against class material. If an explanation still does not make sense, take the specific point to your instructor or submit a question correction.
